According to the latest CDC records from 2006, the top 10 leading causes of death by disease were:
1. Heart disease: 631,636
2. Cancer: 559,888
3. Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 137,119
4. Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,583
5. Accidents: 121,599
6. Diabetes: 72,449
7. Alzheimer’s disease: 72,432
8. Influenza and pneumonia: 56,326
9. *Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis (kidney): 45,344
10. Septicemia: 34,234
Four of those ten have been linked to periodontal disease: an inflammation and destruction of the gums and bone supporting the teeth! Periodontal disease also contributes to premature delivery, still born death, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic kidney disease and more.
Why? Bacterial plaque becomes more dangerous over time. The body triggers an inflammatory response to fight off the infection. (Yes! Periodontal Disease is an infection!) While short term inflammation can help the body heal, chronic inflammation causes constricted blood flow, tissue destruction, and more serious problems. “Many of the diseases associated with periodontal disease are also considered to be systemic inflammatory disorders, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease and even certain forms of cancer, suggesting that inflammation itself may be the basis for the connection. 1”
It’s not “just” about bleeding gums! It’s about an infection that effects your whole body. Periodontal disease is like having an open, bleeding, infected wound the size of your hand. It’s like giving the bacteria in your mouth open access to your blood stream and other organs in your system. That’s serious stuff!
