Gazette’s Ask the Experts: Wisdom Teeth

At what age should a person have their wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth (third molars) usually begin erupting into the mouth around age 20. There is a big range from one person to another.   Rarely though do they erupt fully and often become impacted in the bone and gum tissue of the jaws.  Impacted teeth can damage adjacent teeth and can cause discomfort and infection.  These teeth are often difficult to keep clean and cavity free.  Have your dentist evaluate when the best time is for your child to have their wisdom teeth removed.
